The Ohio-class submarine is the largest US submarine. The Navy ordered nine submarines from the company for $22billion, and has the option of building another. Block V submarines will be longer and more powerful than their predecessors. If they are built according to specifications, they would become the second-largest US submarine.
Ohio-class submarines
The largest US military vessel is the US Navy's Ohio class submarines. They are powered via steam turbines or pressurized-water reactors. They can travel at 25 km/h and can dive to 800 feet. Electric Boat of Groton, Connecticut constructed the Ohio's hull.
The Ohio-class submarines have the ability to carry up 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Each Tomahawk rocket has a range up to 1,000 miles. They can also be equipped to carry up 66 special-operations personnel. The forward-most ballistic missile tubes can also be used as lock-out chambers.
Typhoon-class submarines
The US Navy will soon retire Typhoon-class submarines. These were built to combat Soviet submarines during the Cold War. The US designed the Typhoon-class submarines to be comparable with the nuclear-powered US submarines. The overhaul is currently underway for the lead submarine, TK-208. It is unlikely to return to service, and all of the other submarines in the class are also slated to be decommissioned.
The Typhoon submarine has a multi-hull design that is unique. It features two pressure hulls as well as five inner habitable. There are 19 compartments. The missile compartment can be found in the bow, just above the two pressure-hulls. The submarine's outer light hull is made out of steel while its submarine structure is made of titanium.
Russian submarines
The Russian Navy has four submarines, the Borei class, in their fleet. There are 107 crew members on each submarine. They measure approximately one hundred and seventy metres in length, thirteen meters in width, and weigh around 24,000 tonnes. The submarines are propelled by nuclear reactors and have advanced hulls designed to reduce noise. They can travel at up to 25 knots underwater.
Russia's first four-submarine project, the Belgorod was one of them. It will be able carry Poseidon submarine torpedoes. These are intended for coastal targets. Although the Belgorod will be the largest submarine, many other countries will make larger ones.
Block V submarines
Block V submarines can carry more than the earlier models. They are larger than previous versions and range from 377 to 460 feet. These new submarines are capable to carry up to 10000 tonnes and are second only in size to the Ohio class. Each submarine can deploy up 40 cruise missiles and has eighty three feet of vertical rocket system (VLS).
Block V submarines will also have acoustic superiority upgrades. These upgrades were a priority for the Navy in designing new submarines. According to a February 2022 report from the Congressional Research Service, there will be a 20% difference in the design of the new boats compared to Block IV boats.
