British submariners play a significant role in the UK’s maritime history. They have submerged enemy ships, disrupted naval battles, and tracked down Russian and Chinese spy vessels for the UK Navy.

Royal Submarine Force led many great naval wars over the 20th century. They proved to be more than a nuisance. In fact, a submarine was the most powerful weapon in the world during World War II. They destroyed more German shipping than any other Allied ship.

It was also the first award of a Victoria Cross to a British submariner. This went to Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn (commander HMS Upholder in Mediterranean during World War II). He and his men had a remarkable track record of success, sinking many thousands of tons worth of enemy shipping.

Submariners loved their job. It was dangerous, but they loved it. They could be on patrol for up to six months at a time.

They lived on board a submarine as a home away form home, and often stayed in the boat's bowels. Their galley was equipped with four meals per day and all were freshly prepared by the navy chef.

Their lives were a struggle, however. It was difficult for them to live in this environment of toxic engine fumes.

Red Flu, which caused the deaths of large numbers of crew members, was the first. It spread quickly and almost everyone perished.

MRSA, which is a deadly disease, infected the crew's bloodstream. This reduced their immune system, making it more difficult for them to die.

During the Falklands War three submarines - HMS Conqueror and HMS Splendid - attacked the Task Group 79.1 Argentine Navy carrier group Task Group 79.1 however they did not engage.

They also played an important role during the Cold War, preying upon enemy trade. They submerged a number Turkish and Soviet merchant ships. HMS Swiftsure was a submarine that Barrow-in-Furness designed. It also sank the German cruiser in North Sea.

The Royal Navy of the UK still plays a crucial role in national security. They are part of the Continuous At Sea Defence, which means one submarine is available 24/7 to patrol the seas with nuclear missiles.
