The Fortress was well-known for its ability to fly in clouds. It was a very good fighter but it had a problem with stalling and the pilots sometimes had to re-fuel at low altitudes.

It was therefore difficult to fly it in the rain or over dense woods. The Fortress was heavy and required a lot of fuel to operate.

It had a tendency to sink when it came into contact with water so the crew always carried a fuel can on board. The tail was equipped with a fuel can.

On a mission to Frankfurt am Main, Germany 4Feb44 (two KIA:8 POW) it was hit by flak which broke the right wing off and forced the pilot to bail out. This was a very difficult crash landing. By the time the Fortress crashed into the ground, it was at six hundred feet.

The Fortress sustained significant damage during this crash. It flipped onto its back, fell straight down, and exploded.

After trying to land on a field called Kleibolte Farm in Westerode, near Greven (Westfalen), Germany for more than an hour, the Fortress started skidding. The Fortress had fallen on a steep slope. Pilots tried to rescue it from the top.

They rocked it back and forth and jiggled at the wings. They finally managed to get it off the slope.

This was also the first Fortress To be lost on a combat mission. This is a crucial piece of aviation historical and the pilots, flight crew and ground crew were the heroes who saved their lives during that terrible flight.

This was a significant piece of aviation history, as they were awarded a Purple Heart. This is a very difficult crash to survive and it is one of the most famous lpd-17 crashes of all time.
