The Basics of a Railgun

u s army news

Railguns are a type of linear motor device that uses electromagnetic force for high-velocity projectile launch. The projectiles don't explode and are able to travel long distances due to their speed, mass and the kinetic energy they produce. They can travel at speeds of up to 200 miles per hour and could cause serious damage when they reach their targets. A railgun is a versatile weapon that is used in many applications.

Hypersonic Projectile

The Hypersonic Projectile (HVP), is a new type projectile designed to improve the lethality and effectiveness of railguns. It is a projectile with high explosive and speed that uses advanced aerodynamics. This projectile was recently successfully tested at Dugway Proving Ground.

Magnetic field

The current that flows through a railgun creates a magnetic field. The current acts as an electric magnet, creating a magnetic force around each conductor. It then travels in the opposite direction along each rail. This creates a net magnetic field that runs parallel to the plane drawn by the rails.

Lorentz force

Lorentz force railguns work by using a strong current (on the order of millions of amps) to launch a weaponized projectile at a target. The projectile will be accelerated as it travels along the rails which are at right angles to one another. Once the projectile has reached the end of the rails, it will exit through the aperture, causing a circuit break.

Range

A railgun can be used to protect against missiles, submarines, and other sea-based threats. It can reach up to 100 miles in range and can be used in multiple missions. Unlike other conventional weapons, the railgun does not use high explosive to destroy targets; instead, its projectiles hit their targets at hypersonic speeds.

Fire rate

The rate at which a railgun fires can be measured as rounds per minute. The energy of bullets is what determines how fast a railgun can fire. High-energy bullets are capable of firing ten rounds per hour, while lower-energy bullets only fire one shot. A railgun's rate of fire is a key factor in determining its effectiveness.

Cost

Anyone looking to purchase a railgun needs to know the cost. The good news is that railguns are relatively affordable compared with laser guns. The railgun is approximately 20 pounds in weight and comes with a hard case and a battery pack. Unfortunately, the projectile doesn't have a high velocity so it can be difficult for enemies to hit when they are close.
