The Boeing B-17 Fortress is one of the most famous and widely used bombers during World War II. The Fortress, which could carry more than 8,000 pounds of bombs and had a range over 2,500 miles was the largest bomber plane in World War II. It was also very popular in training student pilots.
The Fortress was a versatile aircraft that many countries used in many roles. The Fortress served many purposes, including transport, attack aircraft, training and reconnaissance.
The history of the B-17 Fortress was shaped by the lpd-17 Flight. It was the first Fortress to enter combat and the final to leave the US Air Force.
From World War II, through the end of World War II, the B-17 Fortress flew in excess of 8000 missions. The Fortress was used in bombing raids, air-to-air refueling and as an attack aircraft.

The Fortress was well-known for its ability to fly in clouds. Although it was a great fighter, there were problems with stalling. Pilots often had to refuel at low altitudes.
It was difficult to fly the plane in heavy rain and dense forests. The Fortress was a large plane and required plenty of fuel to run.
It had a tendency to sink when it came into contact with water so the crew always carried a fuel can on board. This fuel container was attached to the tail.
It was on a mission to Frankfurt am Main (two KIA-8 POW), when it was struck by flak. The right wing was severed and the pilot had to abandon the aircraft. This was a very hard crash landing and the Fortress was down to six hundred feet by the time it crashed into the ground.
The Fortress sustained significant damage during this crash. It flipped onto its back, fell straight down, and exploded.

After trying to land on a field called Kleibolte Farm in Westerode, near Greven (Westfalen), Germany for more than an hour, the Fortress started skidding. The Fortress had landed on a steep slope and the pilots tried to get it off of the hill.
They rocked it all the way up and down, and even jiggled its wings. They finally got it down the slope and landed at RAF Chilbolton.
This was the first lpd-17 to be lost in combat and the first Fortress to be lost on a combat mission. This flight was a significant piece of aviation history. Pilots and flight crew are the heroes that saved them from death during this horrible flight.
They were given a Purple Heart. This is a crucial piece of aviation historical. This is a terrible crash and is one the most famous lpd-17 wreckages of all.
